Professor Kenji Ishihara,
who served as President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering from 1997 to 2001,
has peacefully concluded his rich and impactful 91-year life.

With friends and colleagues and former students all around the world,
he was a unique researcher, scientist, engineer and teacher.
Guided by a precious curiosity, deep understanding, and an inexhaustible abundance of ideas,
serving in countless committees and working on countless projects,
Professor Ishihara stays with us through his teachings, his conclusions and questions, his numerous papers,
and his immeasurable impacts on our lives.

Even in hard times
— perhaps especially then —
we are given the chance to perceive beauty
and reach the fullness of existence
— if we look deeply into the heart of people
and the heart of things,
the heart of soil and the heart of and rock ))
