At Kaštelet, the Dalmatian Flysch is well exposed, displaying a clear alternation of marl and sandstone beds. These deposits form the southern part of the Marjan Peninsula and are particularly well exposed at Kaštelet, making this locality ideal for observing their characteristic lithology and bedding.

The name Kaštelet comes from a Renaissance fortress that the great Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović restored and adorned with wooden reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Christ; it is now one of the most beautiful performance venues imaginable.
